Wigan & Leigh Archive Services showcase event

Staff and postgraduate students are cordially invited to the forthcoming Wigan & Leigh Archive Services Showcase event, which will take place:

Wednesday 27 September starting 15:00, School of the Arts Library – 1st floor, 19 Abercromby Square. Tea and coffee available from 16:00 for networking.

The Archive & Local Studies collections are amongst the richest in the Greater Manchester region, befitting Wigan's history and status as one of the medieval Royal Lancashire Boroughs. The Archives hold records dating back to 1215, with collections including the earliest Royal Charters. Our collections document the history of the entire Wigan Borough from the middle ages, through vibrant early modern communities to the heat of the industrial revolution that transformed the built and natural environment of Wigan and Leigh, right up to the modern day.

The Archive collections contain records from a wide catchment of organisations in the Borough, including: Local Authorities; Churches; Schools; Courts; Hospitals; Businesses; Clubs & Societies; Government Bodies; Estates; and Solicitors. The Archive holds extensive collections of private personal papers and donations of material made by individuals and families, allowing us to build a wonderful social history record of our communities.

From 1974, the photographic collections were developed, resulting in one of the most comprehensive regional photographic records. The Edward Hall Diary Collection is a unique collection of diaries from around the world and is of international importance, recording over 200 diarists, back to 1698.
