Microsoft has retired Windows 7 - Update to Windows 10

Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7 in February 2020. This leaves computers, users and data vulnerable if users continue to run Windows 7.

If you are using a Windows 7 Managed Windows Service (MWS) machine, you will have seen pop-up messages alerting you to this when you switch your PC on. It's imperative that you upgrade your MWS PC immediately. Please follow the instructions below or contact the Service Desk for assistance: servicedesk.liverpool.ac.uk

To protect you, our users, our data and our digital environment, all machines operating Windows 7 will be unable to access our network from 1 March 2020.

Most staff are unaffected as the majority of University computers are now using Windows 10. However, we ask that all staff check the PCs used to manage laboratory equipment, machines, microscopes, etc. If you have any equipment managed via a Windows 7 device, please contact the Service Desk to discuss upgrade options.

Below you will find answers to some frequently asked questions about this upgrade, as well as instructions on how to upgrade your MWS PC.

* I use Windows 7 - what should I do?
You should upgrade to the latest version of Windows 10 immediately. Follow the steps below:

1. Back up your data
You should back up your data before proceeding. Advice and information about how to back up your data is available in the CSD self-service portal.

2. Upgrade to Windows 10 MWS
Follow the instructions in the CSD self-service portal: https://liverpool.service-now.com/sp?id=kb_article&sysparm_article=KB0010282

If your computer does not meet the minimum system requirements for Windows 10, the MWS Installer will notify you and you will need to contact the CSD Service Desk for further assistance. Technicians are available to help you.

* I don't know which version of Windows I'm using
You can find out by following the instructions in this self-help article.

* What will happen if I don't upgrade?
As mentioned above, in order to protect our systems and services, users won't be able to log on to a PC using Windows 7.

* I use Windows 7, but not on an MWS PC. Should I still upgrade?
Yes. If you are using a non-MWS PC on campus, connecting to the University network, you'll need to upgrade to the latest version of Windows 10. Please contact the CSD Service Desk for assistance.

Please note that if your personal computer or laptop is on the Windows 7 operating system it should not be used to access the University network, i.e. work email, University business systems, etc.
