Research Talk: Graeme Milne, "Visual Approaches to the Urban Waterfront"

Friday 14 February, 3-5pm
Walbank Lecture Theatre, 12 Abercromby Square

This talk uses paintings, maps, engravings, lithographs and photographs to explore how we might write waterfront history from visual sources. Port cities have long been a fruitful subject for artists, intrigued by the boundary between land and water, by the machines and structures that people use to cross it, and by the often monumental buildings that cities use to demonstrate their power and prestige on the waterfront. While this work is well known to scholars of art and visual culture, it needs to be better exploited by maritime and urban historians. This work-in-progress discussion will very much welcome audience comments on the images being shown.
